Dear James,

I have been trying to lose weight for years by trying different diets and trying some exercise programs but I always sabotage myself. I know what to do, but just can’t seem to stick to it. Do you have any suggestions?

Dear weight loss student,

The reason why you have been struggling to lose weight and keep it off is that you have some negative unconscious beliefs, thoughts and emotions about creating and maintaining a healthy body at it’s ideal weight. No matter what we do in life, if we do not do the mental and emotional preparation first, it is very rare that we create and maintain results. One way you can begin the process of inner change is to write down exactly what you want of your body. I am talking about it’s shape, it’s ideal weight, it’s ideal measurements, it’s energy levels, it’s capabilities,  etc. After you get very clear and specific, write down all the reasons why you are COMMITTED to creating and maintaining it. Notice I wrote COMMITTED and not a weak word like try or want. Also ask yourself this question, “What about creating and maintaining a healthy body at it’s ideal weight excites me?” Make sure you come up with a minimum of 5 reasons why creating and maintaining a healthy body at it’s ideal weight excites you. The more excited you get, the more likely you will make your new lifestyle of eating mostly healthy foods and regular exercises a permanent lifestyle.
